HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss football team had its first two-a-day practice today, with a two-hour morning and afternoon session at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
"It went pretty well," Head Coach Jeff Bower said. "This afternoon was a little better than the morning. We took the pads off this afternoon. We're going to bang against each other in the morning, so we're trying to get them ready for that."
Following practice, Bower gave a report on several injuries.
Redshirt senior center Robby D'Angelo had knee surgery this afternoon, following meniscus tear in yesterday's practice and will miss 7-10 days.
"It's not the knee he had surgery on this past spring, it's his other knee," Bower said. "If you're going to hurt something in your knee, that's what you want to hurt."
Bower said that players behind D'Angelo on the depth chart, along with redshirt senior Travis Cooley worked at center in practice today. Redshirt sophomore Wesley Housley filled Cooley's spot at left guard on the offensive line when Cooley was under center.
Reshirt junior running back Cody Hull (hyper-extended elbow) "is limited but is going to be fine," Bower said. In addition, freshman running back Tory Harrison (ankle), redshirt senior tight end Jonathan Palmer (pulled hamstring), redshirt sophomore linebacker Mitch Craft (hamstring and ankle), redshirt sophomore C.J. Barrows (sprained knee) and redshirt freshman Octavious Everett (hamstring) also were limited or held out of practice today.
"You'd like nothing to happen injury wise," Bower said. "But typically things happen like they have."
Bower also announced following practice that freshman offensive lineman Tyler Unsworth (Slidell, La.) has left the team.
The team returns to the field on Friday at 8:45 a.m., with a single practice, following the 2-1-2 practice rules mandated by the NCAA until school begins on August 23.
