Luyties Announces Another Volleyball Addition

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Volleyball Coach Ricci Luyties has announced the signing of junior college player, Cassie Lavery of Arma, Kan., to a national letter of intent for the 2006-07 academic year.
Lavery, a 5-8 setter, played volleyball for one season at Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kan., for Coach Lindsay Sowder. She earned second team All-American honors. She received first team all-District J and first team All-Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference honors. She was named conference player of the week twice during the 2005 season. She recorded 1,296 assists and 373 digs as a freshman. She also had 52 service aces and 50 blocks.
Lavery attended Northeast High School, where she was a three-year letterwinner for Coach Lindsey Klemencic. She was a first team all-league her junior and senior seasons. She was named to the honorable mention Topeka Capital All-Academic Team.
Lavery becomes the sixth addition for the 2006-07 academic year, joining Maia Ivanova of Sofia, Bulgaria, Amanda Huntoon of Encinitas, Calif., Kristen Metz of Estevan, Saskatchewan, Canada, Angela Hlavaty of Lincoln, Neb., and Mari Ruddick of Santa Clarita, Calif.
Southern Miss finished 6-19 in 2005 and return six letterwinners in 2006. The Lady Eagles open the 2006 season against Mississippi State in the Capital One Classic in Lafayette, La., on August 25.
