Lady Eagle Tennis Edged By St. John's, 4-3

QUEENS, N.Y. - After winning the doubles point, Southern Miss dropped four out of six singles spots to allow St. John's to come back to capture a 4-3 victory over the Lady Eagles Monday afternoon.
St. John's improved to 10-6 with the win, while Southern Miss fell to 7-12 (1-3 C-USA).
The Lady Eagles opened the match well, winning two out of three doubles slots to take a 1-0 lead. The doubles duos of Ali Blackett and Nikhila Narra, as well as Chelsea Bond and Grace Kammerer, provided wins for Southern Miss, as Blackett/Narra defeated Barbora Blahutiakova and Mariana Chachua (SJU) at No. 2 doubles, 9-7, and Bond/Kammerer defeated Gabija Gasiunaite and Lauren Lorenzetti (SJU), 9-7, at No. 3 doubles. The lone loss came at No. 1 doubles, where Alison Adamski and Nataly Tumsevica (SJU) defeated Sherry Price and Courtney Ulrich, 8-4.
With their wins, Blackett/Narra improved to a team-best 11-6, while Bond/Kammerer increased their record to 4-1. Price/Ulrich fell to 1-4 with their loss.
Southern Miss, however, could not continue their momentum into the singles competition, as St. John's took four out of six singles spots to record the come back victory. Chachua (SJU) defeated Kammerer at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-1, Blahutiakova (SJU) defeated Narra at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3, Adamski (SJU) defeated Natalia Parrado at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0, and Gasiunaite defeated Ulrich at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 7-6.
Two Lady Eagles were victorious in singles, as Blackett won her eighth straight singles match against Lorenzetti (SJU) at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 7-5, and Price defeated Tumsevica (SJU) at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.
With their wins, Blackett and Price improved to 11-4 and 10-6, respectively on the spring singles season, while the records of Narra (11-7), Kammerer (5-14), Ulrich (6-9) and Parrado (3-9) all dropped with their losses.
The Lady Eagles return to action for the second match of their three match road trip, facing Long Island University in Queens, N.Y. at 3 p.m.
