Baseball Hosts Southeastern Louisiana For Midweek Contest

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team (24-10) hosts Southeastern Louisiana (14-16) on Tuesday, April 11, for a midweek game at 6:30 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
The game will be broadcast on WXRR, 104.5 FM, "Rock 104," and anchored by veteran broadcasters John Cox and Lance Pittman. The game also will feature "live stats" from the SouthernMiss.com website.
Tuesday's match-up will mark the 111th meeting between the two teams, with Southern Miss holding a 67-43 record against Southeastern Louisiana. The teams already met once this season in Hammond, La., with the Golden Eagles winning, 8-7, on March 1.
Southern Miss is 132-76 all-time against teams from the Southland Conference. The Golden Eagles are 3-1 against teams from the Southland Conference this season, with victories against Nicholls State (5-2, Feb. 15), Southeastern Louisiana and Louisiana-Monroe (18-5, March 7) and the lone loss coming against Louisiana-Monroe (2-1, March 22).
Southern Miss is coming off a 2-1 weekend record in a series against Dallas Baptist. The Golden Eagles won both games of Friday's doubleheader, 12-9 and 19-7, but fell in the final game on Saturday to the Patriots, 5-4.
Southeastern Louisiana had a 1-3 record last week, beginning with a midweek 6-3 loss to South Alabama in Mobile on Wednesday, followed by a 1-2 weekend series record against Texas-San Antonio. The Lions lost Friday and Saturday's games, 9-7 and 7-1, but won Sunday's game, 3-1, to avoid the sweep.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Barry Bowden (0-1) will start for Southern Miss against freshman left-hander Wade Miley (2-4) for Southeastern Louisiana.
For the season, Bowden has an 0-1 record with a 5.21 ERA in 19 innings pitched, giving up 12 runs, 11 earned, on 17 hits, with 17 strikeouts and 15 walks. In his last start against Ole Miss, Bowden pitched 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits, striking out one and walking three.
Miley carries a 2-4 record and a 7.34 ERA on the season, pitching 30.2 innings, while giving up 28 runs, 25 earned, on 43 hits, striking out 36 and walking 16. In his last start against South Alabama, Miley lasted 2.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits, striking out one and walking one.
The Golden Eagle offense is led by freshman shortstop Brian Dozier, who is batting .372 with 42 hits, four doubles, four triples, seven stolen bases, one home run and 25 RBIs. He is third in Conference USA in batting average, eighth in on-base percentage and 11th in hits.
Sophomore second baseman/third baseman Trey Sutton is batting .371 with 43 hits, five doubles, three stolen bases one home run and 11 RBIs. He is fourth in Conference USA in batting average and ninth in hits. Junior outfielder Toddric Johnson is batting .362 with 51 hits, eight doubles, two triples, five stolen bases, four home runs and 26 RBIs. He is first in Conference USA in total bases, fourth in on-base percentage and sixth in batting average.
The Lions are led offensively by senior third baseman Jason Waguespack, who is batting .311 with 32 hits, four doubles, nine stolen bases, one home run and 16 RBIs. Junior catcher Ricky Newman is batting .298 with 25 hits, six doubles, five stolen bases and 10 RBIs. Senior second baseman Kyle Ginn is batting .287 with 29 hits, 10 doubles, two stolen bases, two home runs and 16 RBIs.
After Tuesday's game, Southern Miss hosts Houston for a C-USA weekend series, April 14-16, at "The Pete." Friday's game will begin at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's game at 4 p.m. and Sunday's at 1 p.m.
