The Southern Miss softball team clinched its third consecutive Conference USA series win, winning twice over UCF today, 7-2 and 6-2.
With the wins, Southern Miss improves to 20-23 overall, 6-2 in Conference USA, while UCF falls to 13-25, 0-11.
In game one, Southern Miss got all the runs it would need in the first inning, as Ashley Brenan connected on a two-run home run to left in the second at-bat of the ball game, scoring Charity Butler, who singled to left to start the inning. Jessica Huerta followed Brenan's home run with a walk, went to second on a groundout by Jennifer Fox and then to third on an infield single by Ashley Davis, before scoring on a throwing error by UCF catcher Cat Snapp.
Southern Miss made the score 4-0 in the second, as Butler hit her 12th double of the season with one out, before scoring on a RBI double by Huerta.
UCF cut the lead to 4-1 in the third, on a RBI single by Kacie Feaster and made the game 4-2 in the fourth on a RBI single by Jennifer Tomasetti, which scored Ashley Baker, who walked to start the frame.
The Lady Eagles cot the run back in the bottom of the fourth, as with two outs, Brenan walked, stole second, before scoring on a RBI single by Fox, making the score 5-2.
Southern Miss got its final two runs in the bottom of the sixth, on a solo home run by Huerta, her first of the season, and on a RBI double by Allison Bullard, which scored Davis, who doubled with two outs.
Lacey Gros (10-10) got the win for Southern Miss, allowing only four hits and two runs, walking five and striking out eight.
Ashley Baker (1-7) took the loss for UCF, allowing 13 hits, seven runs, six earned, walking four and striking out one.
Game two provided little offense until the late innings, as the contest went scoreless until the fifth.
Bullard got Southern Miss' first hit in game two with a hit to start the bottom of the fifth, advancing to second on a wild pitch, before advancing to third, as Nicole Chisolm reached on a fielding error by UCF second baseman Heather Younger. Then with two outs, Butler hit an RBI single off UCF pitcher Allison Kime's glove, as Bullard scored the unearned run.
Southern Miss put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the sixth. Huerta doubled to start the frame, before scoring on a base hit up the middle by Fox. Then with two outs, Pilgrim was hit by a pitch, before Chisolm reached on a fielding error by Younger, scoring Fox. Then Melissa Prouty singled to right, scoring pinch runner Shea Naramore, who ran for Pilgrim, to make the score 4-0. Butler followed with a two RBI double, her 13th of the season, plating Prouty and Chisolm, for the Lady Eagles' final runs of the game.
UCF got two runs in the top of the seventh, as pinch runner Michelle Newton scored on a wild pitch, before Tomasetti has an RBI sacrifice fly, scoring Breanne Javier, who walked.
Danielle Wymer (5-4) got the win for Southern Miss, allowing only four hits and two runs, walking two and striking out one.
Allison Kime (9-10) took the loss, pitching six innings, allowing six hits and six runs, one earned, walking two and striking out five.
On the day, Butler led Southern Miss with four hits, including two doubles and three RBIs, while Huerta has three hits and three runs scored and Davis had three hits.
Southern Miss concludes the series with UCF on Sunday, in a 1 p.m., contest.
