HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Mississippi State-Southern Miss Box Score
The Southern Miss softball team was no-hit by No. 22 Mississippi State tonight, as the Lady Bulldogs claimed an 8-0 victory before 617 at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, the sixth best crowd in stadium history.
With the win, Mississippi State improves to 30-8 overall, while Southern Miss falls to 18-23. The win by the Lady Bulldogs also avenged a 2-0 victory by Southern Miss in Starkville on March 7.
Mississippi State jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first hit, opening the inning with four consecutive hits. After Hayle Guess singled to center, she scored on a RBI triple to right by Nakita Boyce, before Boyce scored on a RBI double by Courtney Bures. After a single by Katie Cooley advanced Bures to third, Callye Williams hit into a double play, before Sammie Jo Bailey singled to short to score Bures.
Those runs provided all the support Lady Bulldog pitcher Ragan Blake (16-3) would need, as she pitched five innings, walking one and striking out eight.
The Lady Bulldogs added three more runs in the third, on a three-run home run by Bailey, before a two-RBI double by Cooley provided the final two runs of the game in the fourth.
Southern Miss' lone base runner came in the bottom of the first, as Jessica Huerta walked with two outs.
Samantha Davis (3-3) took the loss for Southern Miss, lasting 3.1 innings, allowing 11 hits, eight runs and seven earned. Danielle Wymer pitched the final 1.2 innings, walking one and striking out three.
Bailey finished with a game-high four RBI for Mississippi State, while Bures finished with three hits, three runs and a RBI and Cooley posted three hits.
Southern Miss returns to action this weekend, hosting Conference USA newcomer UCF in a three-game series. Game times are set for 1 and 3 p.m., on Saturday, with the series finale at 1 p.m., on Sunday.
