The Southern Miss softball team split a doubleheader with Nicholls State tonight, winning game one 8-7, before falling 7-2 in game two.
With the split, Southern Miss stands 18-22 on the year, while Nicholls State is 10-20.
In game one, Nicholls State took a 2-0 lead, thanks to RBI singles from Leah Peterson and Meghan Mulcahy.
Nicholls State made the score 3-0 on a RBI single by Danielle Clayton in the fifth.
But Southern Miss tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Ashley Brenan and Jessica Huerta walked to start the inning, before both players advanced to second on a passed ball. Jennifer Fox then reached on a RBI fielder's choice, scoring Brenan, before Huerta scored on a passed ball, which also advanced Fox to second. Ashley Davis then singled to third, advancing Fox to third, before Allison Bullard then doubled down he left field line, scoring Fox to knot the game at 3-3.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Eagles put five runs on the board to take a 8-3 advantage. With one out, Brenan doubled, scoring Butler, who was on base with a walk and stole second. Brenan went to third on a wild pitch, before Huerta reached on catcher's interference. A RBI single by Fox scored Brenan and advanced Huerta to second, before Davis singled up the middle, then reaching third base on a throwing error by Colonel shortstop Leslie Bourgeios and Colonel pitcher Krystalin Ensimger, which allowed Huerta and Fox to score. After Allison Bullard struck out, Kristin Pilgrim reached on a throwing error by third baseman Leah Peterson, which scored Davis, making the score 8-3.
But Nicholls State put four runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh, as Kodi Butler scored on a wild pitch with one out, before the Colonels got a two-out RBI single by Amy Thibodeaux and a two-RBI double by Jacqueline Pacheco, before pinch hitter Rachel Pugh popped out to right field to end the inning.
Sophomore pitcher Krystal Crooks (2-3) earned her second win of the season, pitching her first complete game, allowing 13 hits and seven runs, walking three and striking out one.
Ensminger (4-6) took the loss for Nicholls State, lasting 1.0 innings, allowing three hits and five runs, two earned, walking one.
Fox and Davis had two hits to lead Southern Miss in game one, while Fox also had two RBIs.
In game two, Southern Miss took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, thanks to a RBI walk by Bullard and RBI single by Pilgrim. The Lady Eagles would leave the bases loaded in the first.
From there, Nicholls State scored the final runs of the game, knotting the game at 2-2 in the third on a RBI double by Kathryn Harrell and RBI single by Butler.
The Colonels took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth, adding a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to put he game out of reach.
Southern Miss had chances to cut into the Nicholls State lead, but left two runners on in the fourth and the bases loaded in the fifth.
Jessica Barksdale (4-7) got the win for Nicholls State, tossing a complete game, allowing four hits and two runs, walking eight and striking out two.
Samantha Davis (3-2) took the loss for Southern Miss, lasting five innings, allowing nine hits and five runs, four earned, walking one and striking out two.
Southern Miss returns to action on Thursday, hosting in-state rival and No. 22 Mississippi State in a 6 p.m., contest at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
