UTEP-Southern Miss Game Three Box
The Southern Miss softball team dropped its final game to UTEP today, falling 16-5.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 17-21, 4-2 in Conference USA. UTEP improves to 12-20, 1-4.
UTEP put the game away in the first inning, as it put seven runs on the board. Sara Hernandez reached, on a throwing error by Charity Butler, going to second as the ball went into the dugout. After Amber Bennett reached on a fielder's choice, three straight RBI hits from UTEP, back-to-back RBI singles by Sara Ramirez and Simone Holland and a RBI double by Kelly Lombard made the score 3-0. Amber Perez then walked, before Megan Whiteaker reached on a fielding error by Samantha Davis, which scored Perez. After Andi Zolton struck out for the first out, Rachel Schaeffer singled, advancing Whiteaker to second. Whiteaker then went to third on a throwing error by Kristin Pilgrim and scored on a fielding error by Allison Bullard. UTEP's final run came on a RBI double by Hernandez, as it led 7-0 after one inning.
The Lady Miners added four more runs in the third and five more in the fourth to take a 16-1 lead.
Southern Miss made the score 11-1 in the fourth, on a solo home run by Ashley Brenan, her third of the year.
In the fifth, Southern Miss scored four runs, on a two run home run by Brenan, her second of the game and fourth of the year, and a two-run shot by Jennifer Fox, her sixth of the season, to make the final score, 16-5.
Krystal Crooks (1-3) took the loss, allowing three hits and four runs, two earned.
Veronica Flournoy (5-5) got the win, lasting 3.1 innings, allowing three hits and one run, walking two and striking out four.
Brenan finished with three hits and three RBIs today for Southern Miss.
Southern Miss returns to action on Wednesday, March 29, beginning a seven-game homestand, hosting Nicholls State in a doubleheader scheduled for 5 and 7 p.m.
