The Southern Miss softball team snapped its five-game losing streak today, winning twice over UTEP 14-1 and 9-6.
With the wins, Southern Miss improves to 17-20 overall, 4-1 in Conference USA. UTEP falls to 11-20, 0-4.
UTEP took a 1-0 lead in the first game, as an RBI double by Amber Bennett scored Sara Hernandez.
But from that point on, the game was all Southern Miss.
The Lady Eagles tied the game at 1-1 in the third, as an RBI single by Ashley Davis scored Charity Butler.
Southern Miss broke the game open in the fourth, scoring 10 runs, its largest inning of the season. With the bases loaded, Ashley Brenan and Jessica Huerta walked back-to-back, before Jennifer Fox reached on an error, but got an RBI, as Butler scored. Davis then had a two RBI single, while Kristin Pilgrim added an RBI single, before Melissa Prouty had a sacrifice fly foul out to right, scoring Allison Bullard. The final two runs came on a two-RBI double by Butler.
The Lady Eagles added their final three runs in the fifth, as Fox connected on a two-run home run to left, her fifth of the season, while Bullard doubled to center, scoring Davis, to complete the scoring.
Samantha Davis (2-1) picked up her second win of the season, pitching the final 3.1 innings in relief of Lacey Gros, allowing only two hits, walking one and striking out two.
Megan Teal (3-7) took the loss for UTEP, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing eight hits and five runs, three earned, walking three and striking out seven.
Butler, Davis and Pilgrim each finished with three hits, with the total a career-high for Pilgrim. Bullard and Fox each had three RBI, with the three RBI matching Bullard's career-high. Nicole Chisolm finished with a career-high two runs and two hits, with Brenan and Fox each adding two hits.
Southern Miss finished with 17 hits in the game one, its highest total of the season.
In game two, Southern Miss opened with a run in the first, on a RBI single by Fox, that scored Butler, who led off with a walk.
But UTEP then tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the inning, on a solo home run by Simone Holland.
The Lady Miners added another run in the second, on a RBI single by Deanna Camacho.
UTEP then made the score 4-1 in the third, as Sarah Ramirez homered to center field to start the inning, before Bennett scored on a fielding error by Jessica Huerta.
But Southern Miss took the lead for good with seven runs in the fourth, as Brenan walked, scoring Pilgrim, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Huerta then reached on a fielding error, which scored Chisolm, who singled to center. Then Fox walked, which scored Butler, on base with walk, before Davis reached on a fielding error, allowing two more runs to score. Fox then scored on a wild pitch, before a RBI single by Bullard completed the scoring in the inning, making the score 8-4.
UTEP made the score 8-5 in the bottom of the fourth, on a RBI single by Holland.
The Lady Miners made the score 8-6 in the fifth, as Ashley Perez, who reached base on a fielding error by Huerta, scored, as Renee DiPuccio reached on a fielding error by Brenan.
But Southern Miss got an insurance run in the sixth, as an RBI double by Davis scored Brenan, on base with a walk. With that double, Davis broke the school's all-time doubles record, breaking the previous total of 36 set by Sarah Boyd in her career from 2001-04.
UTEP threatened in the bottom of the sixth, as the first two Lady Miners reached base, but following a pitching change to Krystal Crooks, got UTEP to hit into a double play, before a foul out ended the inning.
Crooks then retired UTEP three up and three down in the bottom of the seventh to seal the victory.
Davis (3-1) got her second victory of the day, pitching 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and two runs, both unearned, walking one and striking out three, matching a career high. Crooks worked the final 2.0 innings, striking out one, to earn her first career save.
DiPuccio (1-2) took the loss, lasting 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, three runs, one earned, walking two and striking out one.
Fox finished with two RBI in game two, while Chisolm finished with two hits.
Southern Miss returns to action in the series finale against UTEP at 12 p.m., central time on Sunday.
