Macklin Announces Five Soccer Signees For The 2006 Season

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Soccer Coach Gail Macklin announced the signing of five players for the 2006 season today.
The players will report to campus in August.
Sarah DeFatta
5-7, Defender
Franklin HS, Franklin, Tenn.
Played for Coach Jimmy Burchett at Franklin HS ... Was a four-year letterwinner ... Finished her career with 12 career goals and 19 assists ... Helped Franklin to a state championship in 2002 and 2003 ... Team finished with a 70-16-10 record in her career ... Named 2005 Defensive MVP ... 2005 All-Mid-State and all-county ... Named all-county in 2004 and was selected to the Katy Hunter All-Tournament Team ... Also named all-state and all-region in 2003 ... Played club soccer on the Diadora Impact Central 88 team for Coach Laban Defries ... Helped the team to a 120-15-5 record in her career and six state championships ... Diadora Impact is ranked in the top-20 nationally ... Also lettered in lacrossse for one year and track for three years ... Won the Rebel Award in track ... Chose Southern Miss because of its location, the campus and the soccer program ... Wants to be a significant contributor as a Lady Eagle and is looking forward to playing for Coach Macklin ... Daughter of Joe and Jodi DeFatta ... Born Jan. 31, 1988.

Played for Coach Jennifer Scarborough at Lake Highlands HS ... Was a three-year letterwinner, but did not play her junior season ... Finished career with 52 shutouts ... Assisted on eight goals ... Had two years with no goals allowed ... High school MVP ... Also lettered for two years in track and was a participant in the shot-put ... Played with the D'Fetters Soccer Club for Coach JP Walsh and was the team's captain ... Team ranked No. 12 in the nation and was a State Cup semi-finalist in 2005 ... Member of the Girls Service League ... Chose Southern Miss because she's interested in pursing Sports Medicine as a career and thinks the Lady Eagle soccer program is on the rise ... Wants to earn a starting position as a freshman and earn a solid GPA ... Daughter of Marty and Lisa Glass ... Born Oct. 2, 1987.
Keilah Hopkins

Played for Coach Eric Alonzo at MacArthur HS ... Was a four-year letterwinner ... As eight games in her senior season, had five goals, one assist and 11 points ... Through eight games, team stood 3-5 ... Scored six goals, 11 assists and 23 points as a junior, helping the team to an 11-10-2 record ... Helped the team to a 14-8 record as a sophomore, scoring five goals, seven assists and 17 points ... Posted seven goals, 11 assists and 25 points as a freshman, helping the team to an 11-6-3 mark ... In her career, she has 23 goals, 30 assists and 76 points ... Started 60-of-65 games in her career ... Named Newcomer of the Year in 2003 ... First team all-district from 2003-05 ... Utility Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005 ... Team captain as a sophomore, junior and senior ... Played on the FC Texas club soccer team for Coach Ashley Gordon ... Has one goal ... Also played netball and hockey ... Chose Southern Miss to play soccer in the United States because of Coach Macklin's Northern Ireland ties ... Wants to do well academically and help the team win ... Daughter of Thomas and Carol Hutton ... Born Feb. 11, 1987.

5-5, Sweeper
Meridian HS, Meridian, Miss.
Began her career at Harrison Central HS, before playing the final two years of her career at Meridian HS ... Played for Coach Robert Bridges at Meridian HS ... Was a six-year letterwinner ... Helped Meridian HS to a 7-5 record as a senior, scoring one goal on the year ... As a junior, helped Meridian to a 6-13-1 record, scoring five goals on the season ... Finished with six goals at Harrison Central as a sophomore, helping the team to a 5-14-1 record ... Scored 15 goals as a freshman, 24 goals as an eighth grader and one in the seventh grade ... Helped Harrison Central to the 5-A District Championship and the final four ... Played club soccer for the Gulf Coast United for Coach Danny Owens ... Chose Southern Miss because of the friendly atmosphere and because she wanted to play for Coach Macklin ... Wants to excel academically, as well as on the soccer field ... Daughter of Juan and Vanessa Picado ... Born March 9, 1988.
