JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Southern Miss softball team won a pair of games today at the Jacksonville/Best Western Invitational, defeating IPFW 12-0 in five innings and 7-1 over Jacksonville.
With the wins, Southern Miss improves to 7-9 on the season. The Lady Eagles have also won five games in a row.
In the first game, after a scoreless first two innings, Southern Miss took a 2-0 lead over IPFW in the third, thanks to a RBI fielder's choice by Ashley Davis and RBI groundout by Allison Bullard.
The Lady Eagles made the score 4-0 in the fourth, before putting the game out of reach with eight runs in the fifth, highlighted by a three-run home run by Jennifer Fox, her first of the season.
Danielle Wymer (2-3) took a no-hitter into the fifth, before settling for a one-hit shutout, as she earned her second victory of the season, walking one and striking out six.
Kate Aspergen (0-1) took the loss, throwing four innings, allowing three hits and four runs, walking two and striking out three.
Charity Butler finished with two hits, both doubles in the first game, while Fox also had two hits and a game-high three RBI.
Southern Miss was originally scheduled to meet Jacksonville at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, but the threat of inclement weather forced the game to be moved up to today.
The Lady Eagles jumped to a 4-0 lead in the third. Kristin Pilgrim doubled to start the inning and Nicole Fontenot followed with a walk. Melissa Prouty then reached on a throwing error, which allowed Pilgrim and Fontenot to score. Prouty then scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by Butler and a RBI double by Jessica Huerta scored Ashley Brenan, who walked.
After the Lady Dolphins made the score 4-1 in the fourth, Southern Miss put the game out of reach with four runs in the bottom of the fourth, as Fox singled to start the inning, before she scored on a RBI triple by Bullard. Bullard then scored on a RBI sacrifice bunt by Fontenot, before the final run came on a RBI double by Butler, scoring pinch runner Courtney Kelly.
Lacey Gros (5-4) got the win and won for the third consecutive start, allowing six hits and one run, walking one and striking out six.
Shannon Jensen (2-7) took the loss for Jacksonville, lasting 2.1 innings, allowing two hits and four runs, while walking three.
Fox finished with a team-high two hits in the game.
