HATTIESBURG, Miss - Southeastern Louisiana won all three of the doubles matches and four of the six singles to defeat Southern Miss, 5-2, today, in women's tennis action at Tatum Park.
Sherry Price and Nikhila Narra posted the team's only wins at Nos. 1 and 4 singles.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 2-5 for the season, while SLU improves to 3-1.
"I was pleased with the way we competed today," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "We're dealing with a lot of injuries now. Courtney Ulrich didn't play today because of stomach problems; Sherry Price is getting over the flu and was still a little weak, but pulled off a big win today. We had to pull Natalia Parrado, because of an injured ankle, and Ali Blackett is still struggling with her lower back.
"However, I was pleased with how we played against the No. 75 team in the country. We didn't know how well we were going to play after losing several players to various injuries, but I was happy with the way we played."
Southern Miss began at a disadvantage, losing the doubles point after SLU swept all three doubles matches. Nina Knavs and Breda Kovac (SLU) won at No. 1 doubles, defeating Grace Kammerer and Price, 8-6. Emilija Arnaudovska and Iva Velkovska (SLU) beat Blackett and Narra at No. 2 doubles, 8-4, and Bonnie Phillips and Jana Simurkova (SLU) defeated Chelsea Bond and Natalia Parrado, 8-2, at No. 3 doubles.
With the losses in doubles, Kammerer/Price fall to 2-5, Blackett/Narra drop to 3-4 and Bond/Parrado fall to 0-1 in the dual season.
Price defeated Kovac (SLU), 6-3, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, and Narra won at No. 4 singles against Simurkova (SLU), 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 5-4 (10-5). For the dual season, Price improves to 5-2, and Narra's record now is 4-3.
SLU won at No. 2, 3, 5 and 6 singles to secure the victory. Arnaudovska (SLU) defeated Kammerer, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Velkovska won at No. 3 singles over Blackett, 6-1, 4-6, 10-6, Knavs (SLU) defeated Bond, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles and Phillips (SLU) won at No. 6 singles over Kristi Wittman, 6-3, 6-0.
For the dual season, Kammerer drops to 1-6, Blackett falls to 3-4 and Bond and Wittman each drop to 0-1 in singles.
