Softball Wins Two On Final Day Of Ragin' Cajun Classic

The Southern Miss softball team won twice on the final day of the Ragin' Cajun Classic in Lafayette, La., today, defeating Chattanooga 4-1 and McNeese State, 11-2, in five innings.
With the split, Southern Miss improves to 4-9 on the season and will finish as the runner-up in the Ragin' Cajun Classic with a 3-3 record.
In the first game, senior pitcher Danielle Wymer took a no-hitter into the fifth inning and retired the first two batters, before Laci Upchurch doubled and went to third on a wild pitch. After Ashlan Clarksan walked, Upchurch scored on a RBI double by Carey Cooper, to give Chattanooga a 1-0 lead.
But in the bottom of the fifth, Southern Miss put four runs on the scoreboard to claim the victory. Kristin Pilgrim was hit by a pitch to start the inning, and following a pop out by Melissa Prouty, Charity Butler connected on a RBI double to the centerfield wall, scoring pinch runner Courtney Kelly, as Butler advanced to third on the throw. Butler then scored on a RBI single by Ashley Brenan. Brenan then stole second and scored on a RBI double by Jessica Huerta, who went to third on the throw. Huerta then scored on a foul out by Ashley Davis, to make the score 4-1.
The Mocs left two runners stranded in the sixth and seventh innings, as Wymer earned her first victory of 2006.
Wymer (1-3) pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and one run, walking four and striking out three.
Jaycee Wood (2-2) took the loss for Chattanooga, allowing five hits and four runs, walking three and striking out five.
Against McNeese State, the Lady Eagles found themselves down early, as a home run by Rachel Phillips connected on a solo home run, giving the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead.
But Southern Miss scored four runs in the bottom of the second. Jennifer Fox walked to start the inning, and went to second as Bullard reached on a throwing error by Cowgirl shortstop Kristi Hanan. Kristin Pilgrim then doubled to score Fox, before Melissa Prouty and Courtney Kelly made outs. Butler then walked, before Brenan had an RBI single, which scored Pilgrim. Butler then walked and stole second, before scoring on a RBI single by Brenan, making the score 4-1.
The Lady Eagles made the score 6-1 in the third thanks to a RBI sacrifice fly by Bullard and RBI fielder's choice by Pilgrim.
McNeese State made the score 6-2 in the fourth, on a RBI single by Kristi Hanan.
But in the fifth, Southern Miss put the game out of reach with five runs, to take the victory.
Davis and Pilgrim had a two-RBI double in the inning and Bullard stole home, as the Lady Eagles claimed the run rule victory.
Pilgrim finished with a career-high four RBI in against the Cowgirls, while Fox scored three runs.
Lacey Gros (3-4) got the win for Southern Miss, allowing six hits and two runs, walking seven and striking out five.
Jessica Denham (1-3) took the looss, allowing four hits and six runs, two earned, walking two and striking out four.
Southern Miss will return to action on Wednesday, hosting nationally ranked Alabama at 6 p.m., at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
