Softball Splits Two At Ragin' Cajun Classic

The Southern Miss Lady Eagle softball team split a pair of games today at the Ragin' Cajun Classic, defeating McNeese State 8-6, before falling to Louisiana-Lafayette 15-0.
With the split, the Lady Eagles stand 2-9 on the season.
In the first game against McNeese State, Southern Miss took a 2-0 lead in the first, thanks to a RBI hit from Jennifer Fox that scored Ashley Brenan, who walked with one out and a bunt RBI single by Allison Bullard, which scored Ashley Davis, on base thanks to a fielder's choice.
McNeese State responded with three runs in the bottom of the third. With two outs, Kristi Hanan homered to left. McNeese would then load the bases, and got an RBI hit from Michelle LaVoie and a RBI walk by Courtney Parks, to make the score 3-2.
Southern Miss retook the lead thanks to three runs in the third. With one out, three straight hits, by Jessica Huerta, Davis and Fox loaded the bases, and Allison Bullard then connected on a two-RBI single to center field. Fox was thrown out at the plate attempting to score on the play. Krystal Crooks then reached on a throwing error by Hanan, which allowed Bullard to score, as the Lady eagles took a 5-3 lead.
The Lady Eagles made the score 6-3 in the fifth, as Davis singled with one out, before she scored on a throwing error by Lindsay Davis.
But McNeese State knotted the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth, as Jenny Clay connected on a two-RBI double and LaVoie scored Clay with a double.
Southern Miss had a chance to retake the lead in the sixth, but stranded to runners.
But the Lady Eagles would claim the victory in the seventh, scoring two runs to take an 8-6 victory.
Ashley Davis doubled to start the seventh, which moved her into third place all-time in doubles with 32. Fox then reached on an error and Bullard singled, which loaded the bases. Crooks then reached on a fielder's choice, but Davis was out at home. Pinch hitter Kristin Pilgrim then reached on a fielder's choice, which scored Fox. Bullard then scored as Courtney Kelly grounded out, giving the team an 8-6 lead.
The Lady Eagles got Clay to line into a double play to Davis at first to end the game.
Lacey Gros (2-4) got the win for Southern Miss, pitching five innings in relief, allowing three hits and three runs, walking three and striking out seven.
Jessica Denham (1-2) took the loss for McNeese, allowing 10 hits and eight runs, four earned, walking one while striking out 10.
Bullard set a career-high with three RBI against McNeese State, also finishing with three hits, while Davis had three hits against the Cowgirls.
Against Louisiana-Lafayette, the Ragin' Cajuns went ahead early in the first inning, on a two-run home run by Danyele Gomez.
That would be all the run support Louisiana-Lafayette would need, as it scored two in the second, one in the third, four in the fourth and six in the fifth to take the victory.
Ashley Kirchberg (4-0) got the win for Louisiana-Lafayette, allowing one hit, while striking out four.
Shea Naramore (0-2) took the loss for Southern Miss, allowing six hits and five runs in three innings of work.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday, facing Chattanooga at 10 a.m., before closing the Ragin' Cajun Classic with a 3 p.m., contest against McNeese State.
