LAFAYETTE, La. - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle softball team fell twice today in the Ragin' Cajun Classic in Lafayette, La., falling 6-3 to Chattanooga and 9-0 to Louisiana-Lafayette.
With the losses, Southern miss falls to 1-8 on the season.
In the first game today, Southern Miss dropped a 6-3 decision to Chattanooga in the team's first game at the Ragin' Cajun Classic.
The Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the first, as Ashley Brenan connected on her first home run of the season, a solo shot to center field.
Southern Miss made the score 2-0 in the second, as Nicole Fontenot scored Charity Butler with a RBI single down the left field line.
In the third, the Lady Eagles added another run on a RBI single by Jennifer Fox, which scored Brenan, who led off the inning with a single, went to second on a wild pitch, before stealing third.
Chattanooga made the score 3-1 in the bottom of the third, as an RBI single by Toni Hutchison scored Tara Tembey, who doubled with two outs.
The Lady Mocs added five runs in the bottom of the fourth, to take a 6-3 lead. Laci Upchurch singled to start the inning, and scored on a two-run home run by Alyssa Edwards, which tied the game at 3-3. Robyn Johnson and Jeannie Cochran then hit back-to-back singles, and Ashley Cuticchia singled with a bunt, to load the bases. Tembey then walked, giving the Mocs a 4-3 advantage.
Then in a unusual play, Ashleigh Bull singled to short and Cuticchia was called out on interference. The play initially scored two runs, but following Head Coach Gay McNutt's appeal and a lengthy debate, Cuticchia was called out on interference and the score remained 4-3. Hutchison then connected on a RBI single and Brittney Whittier had a RBI fly out to make the score 6-3 after four.
Southern Miss had an opportunity to get closer in the fifth, as Allison Bullard to the centerfield wall to start the inning, before Brenan walked with one out. Bullard and Brenan each advanced on an illegal pitch, but Fox struck out and Brenan was called out for leaving second base early to end the threat.
Danielle Wymer (0-3) took the loss, allowing 11 hits and six runs, while walking three. JayCee Wood (1-1) got the win, allowing six hits and three runs, walking four and striking out three.
Against Louisiana-Lafayette tonight, the Ragin' Cajuns took a 3-0 lead in the first, thanks to RBI single by Codi Runyan and RBI walks by Desi Chatman, Jessica Lemoine netted the runs.
Louisiana-Lafayette got another run in the third, as Lemoine scored on a wild pitch, giving the Ragin' Cajuns a 4-0 advantage.
Louisiana-Lafayette got three more runs in the fifth, thanks to a solo home run by Ashley Evans and RBI walks by Lacey Bertucci and Holly Tankersley.
The Ragin' Cajuns got their final two runs in the seventh, as Danyele Gomez connected on a solo home run, before Evans connected on a RBI single.
Ashley Kirchberg (3-0) got the win for Louisiana-Lafayette, allowing two hits, walking five and striking out 10.
Lacey Gros (1-4) took the loss for Southern Miss, allowing six hits and seven runs, six earned, walking seven and striking out five.
Southern Miss returns to action on Saturday, facing McNeese State in an 11 a.m., contest, before taking on Louisiana-Lafayette at 4:30 p.m.
