Bower Announces Permanent Football Team Captains

Hattiesburg, Miss. â�" Six members of the Golden Eagle football squad were named as permanent team captains, today, as voted on by the entire team, as announced by Head Coach Jeff Bower.
Senior offensive linemen George Batiste and Travis Cooley, senior tight end Jonathan Palmer, senior running back Conrad Chanove, senior defensive back Jasper Faulk and junior defensive back Brandon Sumrall were named captains by their teammates and will represent the team at the bowl game.
Batiste and Cooley were both two-time All-Conference USA selections and were selected to different All-American teams this past week. They paved the way for the teamâ�TMs first 1,000-yard rusher since 2002 and helped the team run for over 2,000 yards for the first time since 1987.
Sumrall also is a two-time All-Conference USA selection, including third-team honors this season. He is the second-leading tackler on the team with 77 tackles, including two sacks, three tackles for loss, two interceptions and a team-leading three forced fumbles.
Faulk has been a four-year letterwinner as a defensive back and punt returner. He started all 13 games this season at cornerback and leads the conference in pass breakups (12) and has two interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown against UAB.
Chanove, a former walk-on who earned a scholarship in 2005, saw action in all 13 games this season, including two starts and rushing for 258 yards on 55 carries, an average of 4.7 yards per carry. He also has 10 catches for 57 yards and scored a touchdown.
Palmer saw action in 12 games this season as a backup tight end and has two catches for 58 yards, including a long reception of 42 yards.
The Golden Eagles, currently 8-5 overall, 6-2 in Conference USA and the C-USA East Division champions, will make its nine bowl appearance in the past 10 years when it faces Ohio University (9-4 overall, 7-1 Mid-American Conference East Division Champions) in the GMAC Bowl at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Ala., on Jan. 7, at 7 p.m.
