Volleyball Team Sweeps UTEP, 3-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss volleyball team snapped a five-match losing streak, sweeping UTEP, 3-0 (31-29, 30-27, 30-26), Sunday afternoon in the Payne Center.
Southern Miss improved to 14-15 overall and 6-8 in league play, while UTEP dropped to 6-22 and 2-12.
Angela Hlavaty led the Golden Eagles with 15 kills, followed by Ashley Petrinec and Amanda Huntoon with 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Maia Ivanova tallied 16 digs and Nicole Rock came off the bench to record six total blocks.
Amy Sanders led UTEP with a match-high 17 kills and Casey McAnelly added 13 kills. Elsa Reyes had 15 digs for the Miners and Katie Smith added 11.
UTEP opened game one scoring the first three points, before Southern Miss used a 7-2 run to take a 7-5 lead. With the game knotted at 15-15, Southern Miss outscored UTEP 5-1, behind three kills by Mari Ruddick and Hlavaty. UTEP then outscored the Eagles 13-9, tying the game at 29-29. The game ended on two straight kills by Hlavaty, giving the Eagles a 31-29 win.
UTEP scored first in game two and built a 20-15 lead, before Southern Miss went on an 11-2 run, taking a 26-22 lead. UTEP fought back to tie the game at 27-27, taking advantage of two attack errors by the Eagles. Southern Miss took the lead for good behind a block by Hlavaty and Rock. Hlavaty then served an ace and Sanders had an attack error, giving Southern Miss a 30-27 win.
Southern Miss jumped out to a 9-4 lead and eventually pushed the lead to 19-13. UTEP then put together a 5-0 run, cutting the lead to 19-18. The Eagles pushed its lead 26-20 behind Amy Flarity's serving that included back-to-back aces. Southern Miss held on for the 30-26 win.
The Golden Eagles finished the match with 11 aces and 10.0 team blocks with an attack percentage of .248.
Southern Miss steps out of C-USA play, traveling to Alcorn State on Tuesday for a 6 p.m., match, then returns home to close out the regular season against UAB and Memphis. The UAB match is set for 7 p.m., on Friday, and the Memphis match is set for 12 p.m., on Sunday.
