IRVING, Texas - Travis Cooley, a senior offensive lineman at Southern Miss, has been named to the Conference USA All-Academic football team, which consists of 11 student-athletes who have earned a 3.2 cumulative grade point average or better and are a starter or key reserve on their respective teams.
Houston's Wade Koehl (LB) and Tulsa's Paul Smith (QB) have earned unanimous Conference USA Football All-Academic selections, as voted upon by the school's sports information directors and released by the league office. Memphis and Tulsa each had two representatives on the inaugural squad and nine of the 12 C-USA institutions are represented on the prestigious list.
Cooley, who hails from Waynesboro, Miss., is also a first-team all-league selection by the media and is a part of an offensive line that blocked in front of the school's and conference's all-time freshman rushing leader, Damion Fletcher. In addition, Cooley has not surrendered a sack and has been credited with one pancake and a combination of 30 cuts and knockdowns during the year.
In the classroom, Cooley is currently working on his master's degree. He has a 3.65 GPA in human resource management. His accolades also include being named an All-Conference USA second-team member in 2005.
Along with Koehl and Smith, the remainder of the team consisted of Rusty Clayton (DS) and Brandon Patterson (DB) of Memphis, Kevin Roach (WR) of East Carolina, Thomas Morstead (P/K) of SMU, Michael Purcell (DL) of Tulane, Mike Mengers (OL) of Tulsa, Sha'reff Rashad (DB) of UCF and Reagan Schneider (K) of UTEP.
