HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - Southern Miss Head Volleyball Coach Ricci Luyties has announced the signing of California standout, Ashley Mell of Yorba Linda, Calif., to a national letter of intent for the 2007-08 academic year during the early signing period.
Mell, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter, was a four-year letterwinner for Coach Craig Tefertiller at El Dorado High School in Placentia, Calif., where she averaged 3.8 kills per game. She helped her team win two Century League championships and voted her team's best all-around player. She received all-tournament honors in 2005 and 2006. She is currently a member of the Impact Volleyball Club team that won the California Regional 18 and under championship. She also has participated in the Junior Olympic National Championships in 2005 and 2006.
"Ashley has great all-around skills," Luyties said. "She is a good passer and defensive player. Obviously, she will be big at the net. I believe she will make an immediate impact on the program and will have a great career as a Lady Eagle."
