HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Women's Tennis Head Coach Randy Rowley announced the signing of Frank W. Cox High School's Shannon Rogers of Virginia Beach, VA., to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2007-08 academic year.
Rogers, who is captain of Cox High School's tennis team, has participated in the Mid-Atlantic Section of the USTA since the age of 12. In June 2006, she was ranked as high as No. 17 in MATA 18's and the previous June, she finished the 16's at No. 11. Also during the summer of 2005, Rogers played in 16's Super National Clay Court Championships where she defeated the No. 218 ranked player.
The only senior on her team, Rogers recently attended Coach Ed Krass' "College Exposure Camp" at the University of Tampa, where she learned of the Southern Miss Tennis program.
"Shannon's game has the unique combination of power, variety, volley skills and great fight," Krass said. "I would have to say that she is one of the most impressive personalities I've worked with in many years. Shannon is special, and I know she'll be a great teammate and team leader."
