Women's Basketball Team Hosts Jacksonville State Friday Night

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss women's basketball team plays its second home game, hosting Jacksonville State Friday night at 7 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum. The game will be broadcast over WXHB-FM 96.5 with the "Voice of the Lady Eagles" Jason Baker providing play-by-play action with former coach Kay James as the color analyst.
Southern Miss (0-2) is coming off a 69-62 loss to Stephen F. Austin in its home opener. Forward Emer Foley led Southern Miss with 17 points, followed by Anna Patterson with 16 points and Kendra Reed added 11 points in the loss. Patterson also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis, beginning her third season at the helm, owns a 23-35 record at Southern Miss and is 252-192 overall.
Foley leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 20.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Reed is averaging 13.5 points.
As a team, Southern Miss is averaging 61.0 points and 43.0 rebounds per game while shooting 37.6 percent from the field and 76.3 percent from the line.
Jacksonville State (3-0) is coming off an 84-77 win over Georgia Southern. Ashley Boykin led the team with a game-high 27 points and LaTonya McKinney scored 25 points.
Head Coach Becky Geyer is in her first season at Jacksonville State and returns four letterwinners from last year's team that finished 11-17. Geyer also welcomes seven newcomers. Courtney Slaughter is the top returning scorer who averaged 13.2 points per game last season.
McKinney leads the team in scoring, averaging 18.7 points, while Slaughter leads the team in rebounding at 7.0 boards per game. As a team, the Gamecocks are averaging 79.7 points and 42.7 rebounds per game, while shooting 46.1 percent from the field and 71.4 percent from the line.
Following the Jacksonville State game, Southern Miss hits the road for a game at in-state rival Jackson State, Nov. 21. Game time is 7 p.m.
SOMETHING ABOUT JACKSONVILLE STATE Jacksonville State opened its regular season on the road with an 81-76 overtime win over Kennesaw State. The Gamecocks are 3-0 after an 84-77 win over Georgia Southern. The team is averaging 79.7 points and 42.7 rebounds per game. Head Coach Becky Geyer has four players averaging in double figures, led by sophomore LaTonya McKinney at 18.7 points per game. Courtney Slaughter leads the team in rebounding at 7.0 rebounds per game. The team is shooting 46.1 percent from the field, including 45.1 percent from three-point range and 71.4 percent from the line. Jacksonville State has connected on 23 three-pointers and Ashley Boykin has made 12. The Gamecocks are holding their opponents 36.5 percent shooting from the field.
ABOUT THE SERIES This is the second meeting between the two teams. Southern Miss leads the series, 1-0. The last time the two teams played was Nov. 28, 1997, in Hattiesburg in the first game of the Lady Eagle Classic. Southern Miss defeated Jacksonville State on a last second shot by Melody Reed with :01 second remaining, giving the Lady Eagles a 68-66 win.
