HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - Southern Miss Head Softball Coach Gay McNutt announced the signing of Niceville High School's Lana Vaughn of Niceville, Fla., to a national letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2007-08 academic year.
Vaughn, a 6-1 pitcher, is a three-year letterwinner for three-time Northwest Florida Coach of the Year Danny Hensley. She was a three-time selection to the Northwest Florida all-area team and a three-time most valuable player. She received all-state honors and helped her high school team into the regional playoffs as a sophomore and pitched the team to a 5A Sweet Sixteen finish.
"This is probably one of the most exciting signees, especially in the pitching department, that we've had," McNutt said. "I couldn't be happier with our future than I am right now."
For three straight seasons, Vaughn had an ERA under 1.00 and struck out over 200 batters. She played travel softball for the High Intensity Gold that finished 13th out of 64 teams at the ASA Gold Nationals this past summer. It was the highest finish of any Florida team.
