Volleyball Team Defeats Houston In Five-Gamer, 3-2

HOUSTON, Texas -- - The Southern Miss volleyball team defeated Houston for only the second time in the history of the series 3-2 (23-30, 30-20, 12-30, 32-30, 16-14).
Southern Miss improved to 10-9 and 3-2 in Conference USA and snapped Houston's 11-match home court win-streak dating back to last season. Houston dropped to 12-9 and 3-3.
Two Lady Eagle players posted double-doubles led by freshman Angela Hlavaty with 19 kills and 13 digs and senior Amanda Blunck recording 13 kills and 21 digs. Maia Ivanova added 15 digs. Hlavaty also recorded six blocks.
Justine Farmer posted a double-double with 28 kills and 25 digs. Teammates Sunshine Misa-Uli and Becca Sartori added 14 and 11 kills, respectively. Ashley Calhoun also had 20 digs.
The Cougars opened the match winning game one 30-23 behind Farmer's seven kills and holding Southern Miss to a .000 attack percentage.
Southern Miss bounced back to take game two, 30-20, when Hlavaty and Amanda Huntoon combined for nine kills. The Lady Eagles finished the game with a .273 attack percentage and 19 digs. Houston hit a -.021.
The Cougars trailed 2-0 to start game three, but used a 6-0 run to take a 6-2 lead. From there, Houston would dominate the match on its way to a 30-12 win.
Southern Miss battled back from a 3-1 deficit, using a 13-8 run for a 14-11 lead. Southern Miss kept the pressure on and pushed its lead to 27-22 before Houston battled back to tie the game at 28-28. Both teams traded kills until Blunck put down the last two kills, giving Southern Miss a 32-30 win.
Both team battled back and forth in game five, producing nine ties and three lead changes in the process. With Houston leading, 14-13, Southern Miss ended game five with three straight kills for a 16-14 victory.
Southern Miss finished the match with an attack percentage of .147 and 11.0 team blocks. Morgan Johnson recorded six blocks. Cassie Lavery had 44 assists.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday, playing at Rice.
