Volleyball Falls at East Carolina Friday Night 3-0

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Mignon Dubenion led three East Carolina players in double-figure kills with 13 as the Pirates defeated Southern Miss 3-0 (30-26, 20-27, 30-16) in Conference USA volleyball action in Greenville, N.C. Friday night.
The Golden Eagles (13-13 overall, 5-6 C-USA) got a team-high 13 kills from Mari Ruddick, while Amanda Huntoon added 10, but Southern Miss collected just a .173 hitting percentage for the match.
ECU, meanwhile, tallied a .327 hitting percentage over the three games as Kelly Wernert added 12 kills for the Pirates and Melissa Zenter added 11.
In game one, the two teams battled close, but ECU - up 27-26 - scored the final three points of the game behind a kill from Stephanie Turner and a pair of Golden Eagle hitting errors.
Southern Miss found themselves behind in game two 11-4, but closed the gap to 15-12. ECU (17-9, 8-4) then scored four of the next five points to increase the margin, but the Golden Eagles trimmed the advantage to 29-27 late in the game on a kill by Angela Hlavaty and an attack error by Dubenion. After committing the attack error, Dubenion rallied to end the game with a kill to give ECU the 2-0 advantage in the match.
Wernert then took over the final game by notching six kills and the Pirates broke open a 4-4 score by tallying 16 of the next 21 points to cruise to the third-game victory and sweep the match.
Southern Miss returns to action Sunday when they play at Marshall. Match time is set for 12 noon CT in Huntington, W. Va.
