SPRING, Texas - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle softball team competed in the Spring Klein Classic this weekend, resulting in losses against Incarnate Word, Baylor and North Texas.
Head Coach Gay McNutt said that while it is still early in the Lady Eagles' practice schedule, the team shows great potential for the 2007 season.
"We saw some good things in our freshman," added McNutt. "Brittany Wright got in there and made some great plays in the game against Baylor. We saw some really good things with these new girls."
McNutt also noticed some improvement in Southern Miss' pitching unit.
"Samantha Davis pitched really well for us against Baylor," said McNutt. "That was probably the highlight of the tournament because she threw a lot better than she did last year as a freshman. She's really stepping up and being a great leader on the mound for us."
The Golden Eagles host the Southern Miss Fall Tournament on Oct. 28-29. Competing teams will include Jackson State, Alcorn State, Southeastern La., Belhaven, Jones JC, Pearl River CC and William Carey.
Southern Miss opens the 2007 season on Feb. 9 against Stephen F. Austin in the Compass Bank Invitational hosted by Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
