Volleyball Team Falls to East Carolina, 3-2

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss volleyball team had its four-match win streak snapped with a hard-fought 3-2 (28-30, 22-30, 30-27, 30-28, 7-15) loss to East Carolina Friday night in the Payne Center.
The Golden Eagles fell to 11-10 and 4-3 in the league, while East Carolina improved to 13-9 and 4-4.
Southern Miss placed five players in double-digit kills, led by Angela Hlavaty with 20 kills followed by Amanda Huntoon with 14, Amanda Blunck had 13, Mari Ruddick had 12 and Nicole Rock added 11. Blunck also led the team with 21 digs, Maia Ivanova had 13 and Cassie Lavery added 11.
Kelley Wernert and Mignon Dubenion recorded 22 and 21 kills, respectively, Jaime Bevan had 16 kills and Melissa Zentner added 12. Trish Monroe led East Carolina with 14 digs.
East Carolina jumped out to a two-game lead, winning game one, 30-28 and game two, 30-22, before heading into the break. Wernert had 11 kills on 18 swings and no attack errors. ECU was out hitting Southern Miss, .384 to .253.
Southern Miss came out in game three to record 19 kills while hitting .417. The Eagles held the Pirates to .186 attack percentage in the 30-27 win.
Southern Miss tied the match at 2-2 with a 30-28 win. Both teams recorded 19 kills in that game. Southern Miss built a 29-24 lead and held on for the 30-28 win.
East Carolina used an 8-0 run in game five in the 15-7 win. ECU recorded eight kills in the game and hit .350 while Southern Miss hit .000.
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday when the Lady Eagles host Marshall at 1 p.m., in the Payne Center.
