Lady Eagles Continue Conference Play, Travel To Rice and Houston

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss women's basketball team opens 2006 with the second of three road conference games. Southern Miss begins the 2006 portion of its schedule in Houston to play Rice on Jan. 6, and Houston on Jan. 8. Game time is set for 7 p.m., on Friday and 2 p.m., on Sunday.
The game can be heard on WXHB-FM 96.5 with Jason Baker as the "Voice of the Lady Eagles" with legendary coach Kay James as color analyst. Broadcast begins 30 minutes prior to tip-off.
Southern Miss is 4-8 and 1-0 in league, following a 61-50 win over UCF, Dec. 31. Four Lady Eagles scored in double-figures, led by Ashley Boehnel with 15 points, followed by Ashley Harrell with 14, while Kendra Reed and Amber Eugene added 12 points each. Liz Biland and Kelsey Gurganus led the team with six rebounds apiece.
Reed continues to lead the team in scoring, averaging 15.7 points followed by Boehnel, who is averaging 14.2 points and Harrell at 12.4 points. Biland leads the team in rebounding at 6.1 rebounds per game.
Rice, under the direction of Greg Williams, enters the game with a 4-7 record, following a 65-64 loss at Texas A&M on Monday. Lauren Neaves posted a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds in that game. Krystal Frazier led the team with 15 points. This is the conference opener for the Owls.
Neaves leads the team in scoring and rebounding with an average of 12.7 points and 10.3 rebounds. Frazier also is averaging double-figures at 11.5 points per game and has 27 steals on the year. Kadi Riverin leads the team with 34 assists.
Rice is averaging 65.8 points and 41.0 rebounds per game as a team. The Owls return 12 letterwinners from last year's team, including three starters that finished with a 24-9 record. Rice won the regular season title and conference tournament title in the WAC, before advancing to the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Owls are allowing 74.1 points per game average. Rice has lost its last three games.
This is the first meeting between the two teams.
Following the Rice game, Southern Miss remains on the road and heads across town to play Houston on Jan. 8 at 2 p.m.
