Southern Miss Volleyball Team Drops Conference Opener

Southern Miss evened its record at 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play, while UCF improved to 3-5 and 1-0.
Freshman Ashley Petrinec led the Golden Eagles with a double-double with 18 kills and 11 digs. Stevi Cherry had 14 kills and Jazzmien Stephens added 10 kills. Amber Bloom and Ednali Serralta recorded 11 digs apiece. Maina Heming led UCF with 15 kills followed by Jana Mitchell and Schanell Neiderworder with 13 kills each. Heming also had 16 digs.
Southern Miss used a 6-2 run late in game one for a 30-27 win. The Golden Eagles had an attack percentage of .400. Stephens recorded six kills and no attack errors.
In game two, UCF jumped out to a 19-8 lead, fueled by 12 attack errors by the Golden Eagles as UCF won 30-20 to even the match at a game apiece.
UCF used a 12-6 run to take a 22-16 lead in game three. UCF had only two attack errors, leading to a .333 attack percentage. Neiderworder led the way with six kills and helping UCF take game three, 30-19.
In game four, UCF had four players record three or more kills in leading UCF to a 30-19 win for the match. Cherry and Petrinec combined for 12 kills, but it wasn't enough for the Golden Eagles.
