Football Continues Preparation For Houston

HATTIESBURG, Miss.? The Southern Miss football team practiced for two hours today at the Joe P. Park practice facility, continuing preparations for Saturday?s game with Houston.

With Hurricane Rita projected to hit around the Houston area sometime Friday or Saturday, Head Coach Jeff Bower said the team is only focused on playing the game.

?The only thing we?re planning on is playing,? Bower said. ?I was told today that either Saturday, Sunday or Monday, we?re playing. We know we are playing and we are getting ready to play.

?There are no ifs. We are playing the game Saturday, Sunday or Monday. That?s the way we are approaching it.?

Saturday?s game will be Southern Miss? first Conference USA contest in 2005. Since the formation of Conference USA in 1996, Southern Miss is 8-1 in league openers, including a 3-1 mark on the road. It will be the ninth meeting between the two schools, with Southern Miss holding a 6-2 series advantage. Southern Miss has won the past six meetings, including the last three meetings in Houston, 31-10 in 2002, 6-3 in 2000 and 21-15 in 1998.

Game time for Saturday?s contest is set for 6 p.m.
