September 19, 2005: Seventh Diary Entry ? On how the defense played against McNeese State, their brother?s performance in the game, the loss of linebacker Gerald McRath, their reactions to the stadium lights going out and on the fan turnout for the first home game of the year:
Kevis: The defense played well against
Trevis: The defense came out with a lot of intensity, forcing two quick turnovers at the beginning of the game.
Kevis: Trevis played well (three tackles and one interception), though he needs to improve on some things, but I was happy about his interception. Overall, I?m proud of him, and I hope he does more this Saturday against
Trevis: Kevis did all right (four tackles, one tackle for loss and one sack). We had a chance to let some of the younger players get in the game and get some experience with him, so that was good for them. But like he said, there?s always room for improvement for the whole team.
Kevis: One of my goals is to lead the team in tackles (He currently leads the team in tackles with 17; the second leading tackler is Trevis with 11). Being the middle linebacker, you?re supposed to lead the team in tackles. I would like to have an enormous amount of tackles, but I need to go out there and have fun and see what happens. It would be good if I finished the year as the team?s leading tackler, and Trevis finished second, but that has to be his goal as well. But it would be unique to see that because we?re brothers.
Trevis: Like I said earlier in the year, my goal is for Kevis to be the leading tackler on the team, and I would be the second. But if he slips up and doesn?t make enough tackles, then I?m going to be the leading tackler at the end of the year! But I hope that it works out that we will be leading the team in tackles like this throughout the year.
Kevis: Getting the big hit of the game was nice. I felt good about getting the sack on that hit, but I wouldn?t say that it was the hit of the game.
Trevis: It was the biggest hit of the game. I can?t think of any harder hits throughout the game. During the play, it seemed like the quarterback ran into him, and Kevis laid into him.
Kevis: I think Trevis could have gone farther on his interception (19 yard return). I don?t know what he was looking at, but we?re taught to go to the near sideline, though he had the other side of the field wide open. But he did what he was supposed to do.
Trevis: I think I could have ran it back further. If I would have gone to the other side of the field, I think that I would have scored. My momentum took me to the left side of the field, but when I looked up all I saw was white jerseys, and I knew that I wasn?t going to get too many yards going that way.
Kevis: We?re going to be affected a lot by the loss of (OLB) Gerald McRath. Gerald is a good player who is smart. He knew a lot of things on the field because he studied the game well. We?re going to need some of the young guys to step up like (OLB) James Denley. This is a huge loss, but we?re going to have to get past it and have the young guys step up.
Trevis: His loss is going to affect us in a way, but I believe that the guys playing behind him are going to step up and take the responsibility at the position. (Linebackers) James, Marcus Raines and Tumbo? (Tokumbo Abanikanda) are going to have to be ready to play this week, especially with us playing Houston, because they?re going to throw a lot of different things at us to try and confuse us.
Kevis: When the lights went out during the game, with about seven minutes left, it kind of died down the intensity of the game, though it was almost over. It wasn?t funny, but it was a shock that the lights went off. But the coaches told us to stay loose and stretch out on the sideline and to be ready for the next play.
Trevis: It kind of reminded me of two weeks ago against
Kevis: I didn?t expect the fan turnout that we had (28, 174). Coach Bower thought that there wasn?t going to be as many people in the stadium because of the hurricane and with some people not being able to get hotels. But we had great fan support. It was great to have those true fans come out and support Southern Miss.
