Southern Miss Volleyball Team Finishes Second

MOBILE, Ala. --- For the second straight time this season, the Southern Miss volleyball finished second in a tournament. Southern Miss defeated South Alabama, 3-0, and then followed that with a 3-1 loss to North Florida on Saturday at the 2005 Jaguar Challenge.

Two Lady Eagles were named to the all-tournament team, freshmen Ashley Petrinec and Stevi Cherry. UNF's Kelley Kazmierczak was named tournament MVP and joining her on the all-tournament team were Jenna Thomas (UNF), Via Filipe (USA), Whitney Sanders (USA), Jaclyn Toohey (Ole Miss) and Nicki Hill (Ole Miss).

Amber Bloom posted 18 kills in helping Southern Miss sweep South Alabama, 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 31-29). Ashley Petrinec had 13 kills and 12 digs and Morgan Johnson added 12 kills. Jazzmien Stephens recorded eight blocks.

In their second match of the day, North Florida defeated Southern Miss, 3-1 (22-30, 30-21, 30-32, 27-30) to win the tournament. Against UNF, Stevi Cherry led the team with 15 kills followed by Johnson with 12 kills. Amanda Blunck recorded a career-high 34 digs and Kaitlyn Deutsch added 15 digs.

Southern Miss returns to action on Sept. 23, opening Conference USA play at Tulsa. The Lady Eagles will play their first home volleyball match on Sunday, Sept. 25, in Reed Green Coliseum.
