Southern Miss Volleyball Team Downs Ole Miss In Five Games

MOBILE, Ala. --- The Southern Miss volleyball defeated in-state rival Ole Miss in five games, 3-2 (23-30, 31-29, 30-27, 30-32, 15-13) at the Jaguar Challenge on Friday.
Southern Miss improved to 3-2, while Ole Miss dropped to 6-4.
Freshmen Stevi Cherry (20) and Ashley Petrinec (18) combined for 38 of the Lady Eagles 70 kills. Amanda Blunck led the team with a match-high 26 digs. Cherry also added 12 digs. Kristen Carroll led the Rebels with 19 kills, followed by Jaclyn Toohey and Nikki Hill with 17 kills each.
Ole Miss took the first game, 30-23. The Lady Eagles regrouped to take games two and three, 31-29 and 30-27, respectively. Ole Miss used a 13-4 run to take a 29-28 lead late in the match and held on for the 32-30 win in game four. Following a 10-10 tie in game five, Southern Miss outscored Ole Miss 5-3 in the decisive game, 15-13.
The win is only the fourth time the Lady Eagles have defeated Ole Miss in 27 meetings.
