Football Continues Preparations For McNeese State

HATTIESBURG, Miss.? The Southern Miss football team continued its preparations for Saturday?s McNeese State game today, with a two-hour practice at the Joe P. Park practice facility.

The team, which left for Memphis due to Hurricane Katrina on Sept. 1 and returned to Hattiesburg following Saturday?s Alabama game, has returned to a normal routine. The players resumed classes on Monday and began their regular game week preparation on Sunday.

Head Coach Jeff Bower said the team is glad to be back on a normal schedule, and is looking forward to Saturday?s home game.

?We?re excited about it,? Bower said. ?The players are excited. We?re excited to get back on campus with our normal routine. This is an important game for us. The players know that. They know they will have to play extremely well.?

Bower said playing at home is important to the team, and he hopes all the fans that can attend, will come to the game.

?We want to play for our crowd and for everyone in South Mississippi that has been through the Hurricane,? Bower said. ?I don?t know how many fans can make it to the game. There are no hotel rooms. There is a curfew on the coast and some of our fans may be concerned about that. I hope that people that can come will come and be in the stands. We?re playing this game for them.?

Bower said following practice that redshirt senior Kevis Coley is ?good to go? and will not miss any of the McNeese State game. Bower added junior Caleb Hendrix (hamstring) is ?not doing anything? in practice, while redshirt junior Matthew Chatelain did not practice today because of virus.

?We?re in pretty good shape injury wise,? Bower said. ?Usually at this time, you have a few more bumps and bruises.?

Bower also said that redshirt freshman Philip Tobias has quit the team.

Southern Miss (0-1) host McNeese State (1-0) in a 6 p.m., contest on Saturday.
