Soccer To Open Season Against Louisiana-Lafayette Friday

HATTIESBURG, Miss.? The Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team opens its 2005 season Friday, hosting Louisiana-Lafayette in a 4 p.m., match. Live stats will be available on southernmiss.com. It will be the season opener for both schools.
In season opening matches, Southern Miss owns a 4-4 record, but has won two consecutive season openers, and three of the last four. In season home openers, Southern Miss owns a 3-1 record, including the last three.
This will be the second meeting between the two teams, with Southern Miss holding a 1-0 series advantage by virtue of a 2-0 victory at Louisiana-Lafayette in 2003. The two schools were scheduled to meet in 2004, but inclement weather associated with Hurricane Ivan forced the match to be rescheduled to this season.
Southern Miss (0-0) enters Friday?s match following a 4-0 defeat at No. 6/7 Texas A&M on Aug. 20 in preseason action. In that game, freshman Sarah McFadden recorded two shots, while freshman goalkeeper Holly Cox posted 10 saves.
The Lady Eagles enter the season off a 5-11-1 mark in 2004, in Head Coach Gail Macklin?s first season. Macklin and her staff welcome back 14 letterwinners and eight starters to the team in 2005.
Southern Miss scored 21 goals in 2004, averaging 1.16 goals a contest. The team took 221 total shots, including 107 on goal, while making 62 saves.
Junior Carly Barkley returns as the leading goal scorer with five, also returning a team-high 12 points. She has 14 career goals, which ranks sixth on the school?s all-time list. Sophomore Megan Kolts returns as the team?s second leading goal scorer with two, and led the team with three assists in 2004.
Senior Micah Stephens and junior Kim Turner, named Conference USA Players to Watch in 2005, added single goals in 2004, along with juniors Sarah Brennan and Andrea Kerkhoff.
Louisiana-Lafayette (0-0) finished 7-10-2 in 2004, and return six starters and 16 letterwinners to the team in 2005.
The Ragin? Cajuns scored 31 goals in 2004, averaging 1.57 goals a contest. The squad took 235 shots, including 109 on goal, while making 89 saves.
Sophomore Kristina Nadolski returns a team-high three goals and nine points in 2005, also returning a team-high three assists with teammate Kelli Good. Good posted two goals in 2004, also finishing with seven points.
Louisiana-Lafayette returns both goalkeepers in 2005. Sophomore Kristen Malen posted 58 saves last season. Junior Anna Brannon finished with 27 saves in 2004.
