Soccer To Meet Texas A&M In Preseason Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss.? The Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team will meet Texas A&M at 8 p.m., on Saturday, in the team?s only preseason contest in preparation for the 2005 season. Live stats and audio will be available at http://www.aggieathletics.com/live/soccer/. The two schools have never played each other, and will be the first preseason match for both teams.
Southern Miss enters the season off a 5-11-1 mark in 2004, in Head Coach Gail Macklin?s first season. Macklin and her staff welcome back 14 letterwinners and eight starters to the team in 2005.
The Lady Eagles scored 21 goals in 2004, averaging 1.16 goals a contest. The team took 221 total shots, including 107 on goal, while making 62 saves.
Junior Carly Barkley returns as the leading goal scorer with five, also returning a team-high 12 points. She has 14 career goals, which ranks sixth on the school?s all-time list. Sophomore Megan Kolts returns as the team?s second leading goal scorer with two, and led the team with three assists in 2004.
Senior Micah Stephens and junior Kim Turner, named Conference USA Players to Watch in 2005, added single goals in 2004, along with juniors Sarah Brennan and Andrea Kerkhoff. Stephens will miss the Texas A&M game because of surgery on her knee.
Southern Miss will break in a new goalkeeper on Saturday. Freshman Holly Cox is expected to get the start, but freshman Christina Duvall is expected to see action in the net.
Texas A&M, ranked No. 6 and No. 7 in preseason polls, returns 10 starters and 23 letterwinners from last year?s squad finished 18-6 with a No. 15 national ranking. Texas A&M is also picked to win the Big 12 in 2005, after winning the Big 12?s regular season and tournament championships last season, also advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th consecutive year.
The Aggies finished 2004 with 72 goals, averaging three goals a contest, with 67 assists. The team took 494 shots, with 226 coming on goal.
Sophomore Ashlee Pistorius returns as the team?s leading goal scorer with 19, leading the team with 44 points in 2004. Senior Carrie Berend returns as the team leader with eight assists. Senior Kati Jo Spisak returns as the team?s goalkeeper, finishing with 57 saves in 2004, also posting seven shutouts.
Saturday?s match against Texas A&M begins at 8 p.m. The Lady Eagles open the 2005 season at home against Louisiana-Lafayette at 4 p.m., next Friday, Aug. 26.
