Softball Falls To DePaul, 1-0, In Heartbreaker

With the win, DePaul improves to 39-18, while Southern Miss falls to 29-31.
Southern Miss threatened in the top of the first. With one out, Melissa Prouty singled to left and advanced to second on a walk by Jessica Huerta, but DePaul pitcher Megan Huitink got the final two outs in the inning to escape damage.
DePaul also threatened in the first, as Kenney walked to lead off the inning, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt by Parker. After a foul out by Linda Secka, Saskia Roberson walked, but Krystal Crooks escaped damage, getting a fielder?s choice by Doezie, forcing Kenny out at third base.
The Lady Blue Demons got the only run of the game in the fifth. With two outs, Ashley Parker reached on a fielding error by Crooks, stole second and advanced to third as Linda Secka reached on a fielding error by Charity Butler. Then, on a double steal, Parker scored, escaping the tag of Lady Eagle catcher Allison Bullard, while Secka reached second, as the Blue Demons took a 1-0 lead.
Huitink (17-10) got the win for DePaul, limiting the Lady Eagles to two hits, while walking two and striking out five.
Crooks (14-12) took the tough loss, limiting the Blue Demons to only three hits and one run.
