Softball Falls In Slugfest To UAB, 12-11

With the loss, Southern Miss drops to 26-29, 8-13 in Conference
Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead in the first. Diane Hammes led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Melissa Prouty. Jessica Huerta walked and Hammes advanced to third on a fielder?s choice by Jennifer Fox that forced Huerta out at second. Hammes then scored on a throwing error by UAB second baseman Leigh Walker.
UAB responded by scoring five runs in the bottom of the inning, as it sent nine batters to the plate. After two outs, Sara Christoph doubled and scored and Kris Lara followed with a walk. Roberts was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Carrie Christoph singled which scored Sara Christoph and Lara scored on a wild pitch. Amanda Antonovic then cleared the bases with a two-RBI double, scoring Dusti Roberts and Carrie Christoph, as UAB led 5-1.
The Lady Eagles rebounded in the top of the third, adding five runs of their own. With two outs, Krystal Crooks singled and advanced to second, as Allison Bullard was hit by a pitch. Hammes followed with a three-run home run, her fourth of the season, to make the score 5-4. Prouty then followed with a single and went to second on a walk by Huerta. Prouty and Huerta advanced to second and third respectively on a wild pitch and Fox loaded the bases with a walk. Davis followed with a RBI fielder?s choice scoring Prouty and Huerta scored on a throwing error by Blazer second baseman Walker, as the Lady Eagles took a 6-5 advantage.
The Blazers re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Roberts reached on a throwing error by Huerta to start the inning and advanced to second. She took third on a wild pitch and then scored on a RBI single by Antonovic. Antonovic stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by Bullard. Following a walk by
Southern Miss again took the lead in the fourth. Huerta led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a single by Fox.
UAB tied the game at 10 in the fourth, on a RBI single by Nicole Whitlock.
The Lady Eagles added a single run in the fifth to take a 11-10 lead, thanks to a RBI single by Davis, which scored Huerta, who led off the inning with a walk.

Crooks (12-11) took the loss for Southern Miss, allowing seven hits, three runs, two earned, while striking out two and walking one.
Jennifer Nelson got the win for UAB, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs, while striking out one and walking seven.
On the day, Hammes led Southern Miss with four RBI, while Hammes and Davis each had two hits. Huerta set a school record with five walks today.
Southern Miss returns to action May 7-8 with a home three-game series against
