Football Concludes First Week Of Spring Workouts
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss football team practiced for nearly two-and-a-half hours at the Joe P. Park Practice field on Saturday, wrapping up the first week of the 2005 spring season.
The workout was the fourth of the week and second in pads, and Head Coach Jeff Bower felt that it was a session that got better as the day went on.
"The practice went all right," Bower said. "It started out slow, but the longer we were in it, the better it got. Our team period against each other in goal line was very good. It's kind of the opposite of yesterday."
With the first week in the books, Bower said that the focus needs to remain on improving each and every day.
"We just want to get better," Bower said. "We want to improve as a football team and continue to work on fundamentals and execution. We are still searching in some positions to see who is going to step up and play for us."
Now the team will take two days off for the Easter Holiday before returning to the field on Tuesday. Practices will follow on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with possible scrimmage work occurring on Friday and Sunday.
"We've scrimmaged goal line and short yardage over the last two days, and that's been good," Bower said. "But we need to put our guys in those types of situations as much as we can."
The team has 11 of the NCAA-mandated 15 workouts scheduled for the spring season, which wraps up with the annual Black and Gold Spring Game, Saturday, April 16, at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
