Southern Miss Falls In Three Games To East Carolina

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - --- East Carolina served up seven aces and recorded 11.0 blocks and defeated Southern Miss in three games, 3-0 (30-25, 30-14, 32-30) in Conference USA volleyball action on Saturday night in the Payne Center.
Ashley Petrinec led the Golden Eagles with 10 kills, while Morgan Johnson added eight kills. Amanda Blunck led the team with eight digs. ECU's Pam Ferris posted a match-high 15 kills and teammates Kelley Wernert and Mignon Dubenion chipped in 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
Southern Miss opened game one scoring the first two points before ECU out scored Southern Miss 5-1 for a 5-3 lead. Southern Miss did not regain the lead as ECU took game one, 30-25. Ferris and Wernert combined for 12 kills.
In game two, Southern Miss failed to get its offense in gear, while ECU used a big service game by Heidi Krug and Ferris in a 30-14 win. East Carolina out hit Southern Miss, .479 to -.026.
Both teams battled back and forth in game three, with neither team having more than a three point advantage through the first 14 points. ECU pushed its lead to six, 20-14, before Southern Miss used an 11-4 run to take a 25-24 lead. ECU knotted the game at 25-25 on a Ferris kill, but Ferris had a serve error to give Eagles a 26-25 lead. Southern Miss had game-point, 29-28, but Wernert put down a kill to tie the game at 29-29. Petrinec gave Southern Miss its last lead, 30-29 on a kill. ECU got a kill from Ferris and Dubenion and Stevi Cherry had an attack error, giving ECU a 32-30 win.
Southern Miss plays its third home match on Monday against Florida A&M at 7 p.m., in the Payne Center.
