Marshall Sweeps Southern Miss In Conference Volleyball Action

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - -- Marshall's Stephanie Cahill recorded a match-high seven aces and Kelly-Anne Billingy recorded 23 kills in leading the Thundering Herd past Southern Miss in three games, 3-0 (30-18, 30-26, 30-16) in volleyball action on Friday night in the Payne Center.
Ashley Petrinec led the Golden Eagles with eight kills and Morgan Johnson added seven kills. Amanda Blunck had 12 digs. Marshall's Amber Sims also added 12 kills.
Marshall used a big serving game in game one, when Cahill served for seven-straight points to help the Thundering Herd take a 21-12 lead. Southern Miss could not over the lead, losing 30-18. Billingy posted nine kills on 11 attempts while Cahill recorded five service aces.
In game two, Southern Miss used an 8-3 run to take a 20-19 lead. Marshall then answered with a 5-1 run, taking the lead for good for the 30-26 win.
In game three, Cahill and Maggie Arias combined to serve for 12 points in a 12-1 run, building a 16-4 lead. Southern Miss could not overcome that lead, losing 30-18.The Herd hit the Golden Eagles .306 to -.100. Marshall finished the match with a .400 hitting percentage, while Southern Miss hit .090. The Herd also recorded 10 aces.
Southern Miss returns to action on Saturday, when the Golden Eagles host the Pirates of East Carolina in a 7 p.m. match.
