Getting to Know Your Golden Eagles

Throughout the 2005 Golden Eagle football season, a player from the offense, defense and special teams will sit down for an interview with Southern Miss Athletics Media intern Mallory Haynes on what you need to know about Southern Miss football.
This week's spotlight focuses on wide receiver Anthony Perine and defensive back Caleb Hendrix.
Anthony Perine
How do you feel about your performance so far this season?
"I think I've done alright. I'm trying to live up to the expectations of this school. I'm trying to work hard each day and get better."
What do you plan to change or correct about your particular style of play?
"I need to become more consistent. There are some plays out there that I can make; they may be difficult plays, but I have to make them. I need to try to work extra hard to be more consistent."
What is your favorite stadium to play in besides M.M. Roberts?
"The Liberty Bowl Stadium. We try to end up playing there every year as C-USA Champs."
You are said to be one of the team's fastest players. About how fast is that?
"I haven't run the forty in a while. I run about a 4.4."
What do you plan on doing with a coaching and sports administration degree?
"I plan on trying to coach at the college level or be an athletic director."
If I got in your car right now, what music would be playing on your radio or CD player?
"Rap."
How hard did you have to work to earn a starting position this season?
"I had to work real hard. I always tried to work myself into the rotation. This year I felt like I was fighting for an extra position since the other receiver left. It was a battle during two-a-days."
What other sports do you play besides football?
"I play a little baseball. I'll shoot the basketball a little, but I'm not that good at it. I did a little track in high school."
Who is your favorite NFL team?
"Dallas Cowboys."
What NFL player do you model yourself after or admire the most?
"Steve Smith. He's not that big, but he makes plays."
Caleb Hendrix
How do you feel about the practices so far this week?
"I feel pretty good about it. As far as going up against Memphis, I feel good and confident. Hopefully we'll come out with a victory."
Which opponent do you look forward to playing the most?
"It's tough to say. I just go out there and try to play my best every time."
How do you plan to adjust your playing style in order to improve?
"Being more physical. Throughout the season, I feel like I'm playing soft sometimes. I just try to be more aggressive."
If you weren't playing football, what would you do with all of your extra time?
"Playing the Playstation or talking on the telephone. I enjoy playing Madden '06."
Which coach do you model yourself after?
"All the coaches are great. If I had to choose one, I would say either Coach Pollard or Coach Hopson. I can go and talk to them anytime."
If you could describe yourself in two words, what would they be?
"Quiet and laid back."
Being a USM athlete, are you required to attend other athletic events?
"It's always good to go and support the other teams. We aren't required to go, but it is fun to watch the other athletes. It's all about support."
If you could be drafted by the NFL tomorrow, who would you want to go to?
"Dallas Cowboys."
What can you do with a degree in recreation?
"You can do all kinds of things. You can work at a gym or work with kids."
What do you plan on doing with a recreation degree?
"I definitely want to work with kids. I want to help them like I was helped."
You were injured last year and weren't able to play against Memphis. Does that make you a little anxious this week?
"I'm very anxious to play them. This is very exciting game, and I'm looking forward to it."
