Volleyball Ends Season, Falls 3-0 To East Carolina

Southern Miss' volleyball season came to a close today, as the team, seeded No. 12, fell 3-0 (30, 21, 32-30, 30-27) to No. 5 seed East Carolina in the Conference USA Tournament played at Autry Court in Houston, Texas.
With the loss, Southern Miss ends its season with a 6-19 overall record, 0-14 mark in Conference USA Tournament. East Carolina improves to 21-9 overall, 9-6 in Conference USA.
In the first game, the Lady Eagles fell behind 10-2 early, before falling 30-21. The Lady Eagle rebounded in game two, leading early 3-1 off a kill by Stevi Cherry, only to see East Carolina knot the game at 3-3. The Lady Eagles again led by three, 11-8 on another kill by Cherry and again by three, 14-11, on a kill by Ashley Petrinec. From there, East Carolina used a 7-0 run to take an 18-14 advantage, before the Lady Eagles knotted the game at 27-27 thanks to an attack error by Lady Pirate Kelley Wernert. With the match tied at 30-30, East Carolina won the final two points to claim game two 32-30. Cherry had a game two high 10 kills.
In the final game, the Lady Eagles found themselves down early, before taking a two-point lead, 21-19, thanks to a 8-2 run. The Lady Eagles again led by two, 22-20 on a kill by Cherry, 23-21 on another kill by Cherry and 24-22 off an attack error by Lady Pirate Kelley Wernert. But East Carolina closed the match on an 8-3 run to take a 30-27 victory in the final game.
Cherry finished the match with a game-high 18 kills, as she posted her fourth double-double of the season (18 kills, 10 digs). Morgan Johnson added 10 kills for Southern Miss, while Petrinec added seven digs.
Pam Ferris had 17 kills and 16 digs for East Carolina, while Wernert added 16 kills and Erica Wilson added 11. Trish Monroe added 13 digs.
