Lady Eagle Volleyball Team Falls In Season Finale

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - - Seniors Jazzmien Stephens and Leslie Robertson's final home match didn't go as planned, the Southern Miss Lady Eagle Volleyball team lost its season finale in three straight games, 3-0 (30-13, 30-28, 30-24).
With the loss, Southern Miss' record now stands at 6-18 overall and 0-14 in Conference USA, while UCF snapped a three match-losing streak, improving to 8-16 and 6-10 in C-USA.
Ashley Petrinec and Morgan Johnson recorded nine kills apiece to lead the team. Ednali Serralta, who missed the last four matches with a sprained knee, led the team with 13 digs, Amanda Blunck had 12 digs and Robertson added 10. For the Golden Knights, Maina Heming led all players with a match-high 17 kills, followed Jana Mitchell with 12 kills and 10 blocks. Schanell Neiderworder added 10 kills. Heming also led the team in digs with 12.
After Southern Miss cut UCF's lead to three, 9-6, UCF then used an 18-2 run on its way to a 30-13 win in game one. UCF out hit Southern Miss .258 to -.222 and recorded nine total blocks in the process.
There were 14 ties in game two. Southern Miss led four times during the game. With the score tied 20-20, UCF's Neiderworder served six straight points, taking a 26-20 lead. The Golden Eagles fought back within a point, 29-28, but a Golden Eagle ball-handling error gave UCF to win, 30-28.
UCF jumped out to an early lead in game three, building as many as an eight point lead, 19-11. Southern Miss chipped away at UCF's lead, finally cutting it to one, 24-23, before UCF outscored Southern Miss 6-1 down the stretch.
Both teams will travel to Houston, Texas, for the Conference USA Volleyball Tournament, Nov. 17-21 at Rice University.
