Golden Eagles Rally Past Southeastern In Five-Game Contest

HAMMOND, La. - Southern Miss rallied from two games down to claim an 18-30, 28-30, 30-27, 30-22, 15-9 win Tuesday night over Southeastern Louisiana at the University Center.
Freshman Ashley Petrinec recorded 16 kills, including seven in the fourth game, as USM (5-9) snapped a four-game losing streak. Southeastern, playing in the
Southeastern came out swinging in the first game, hitting .400 (18-4-35) led by Melissa Jones, who five kills with Anthony and Keri Hamblin adding four. The Lady Lions outhit the Golden Eagles in the second game, .095-.023, before the Golden Eagles started to warm up beginning in the third game after hitting a combined .013 (21-20-78) in the first two.
The Golden Eagles, who lost to visiting Southeastern last season in five games after claiming the first two, hit .256 in the third with Petrinec and Stevi Cherry posting four kills each. Petrinec, USM's leader in kills per game, carried the Golden Eagles in the fourth as she hit .462 in 13 attempts. The Golden Eagles hit .316 in forcing a fifth game while Southeastern hit .132.
Southeastern opened the fifth game with a 3-0 lead after a service error by USM's Ednali Serralta and a pair of Lady Lions aces by freshman Kelsey Faulk. But Southern Miss rallied as it scored six of the next eight points to take a 6-5 lead and the Golden Eagles never trailed again.
Hamblin added 14 kills and 10 digs for Southeastern while Jones had 13 kills and freshman Brittany Pomes a season-high 12. Faulk led the Lady Lions with 18 digs with Erin Miles adding 16, Megan Sutherland 14 and Cude 13. Cherry added 12 kills and a match-high 20 digs for USM while Petrinec added 17. Serralta dished out 48 assists for the Golden Eagles, who finished with a .169 hitting percentage.
