Twin brothers Kevis and Trevis Coley will sit down with athletics media relations graduate assistant Joe Trahan during the 2005 football season to provide fans an inside look into the life of a Southern Miss football player in practices and upcoming games. The starting middle linebacker and starting free safety are expected to give opposing offenses double trouble this season.
August 16, 2005: Week 1 Diary Entry - On Completion of The First Scrimmage of The Season and The First Two Days of Two-A-Days:
Kevis - The defense played pretty good for the first scrimmage. We played fast and physical, but we've got to start playing with a lot more emotion and make that become contagious for the whole team. If we start playing with more emotion, we can start to do some things.
Trevis - I think the defense came out and played well against our offense.
Kevis - Based on what we saw today with the defense, I'm looking forward to having fun out there, running the defensive schemes, blitzes and just making plays.
Trevis - We just started two-a-days on Monday and there's been a lot of emotion and enthusiasm on the practice field, as far as on the defensive side. I don't know too much about how the offense is doing, but the defense is doing well and hopefully we'll continue it.
Kevis - As far as the play of the offense, they have been making some small mistakes here and there, but as a team, we need to pick it up, and I believe that the offense is going to get the job done. I really see Larry Thomas as one of the up and coming running backs. He's going to be a good player. He's got a lot of heart; he's not that big, but he plays with a lot of heart.
Trevis - Both the offense and the defense have a long ways to go, but we're making steady progress. The player that I see making an impact so far this year on offense is Antwon Courington. He's a playmaker on the offensive side and has really shown a lot of ability.
Kevis - As far as the defense, we're doing pretty good so far. We have to quit making the the mental mistakes and continue improving. The defense has to go out and play hard without thinking about it. If we continue to play fast and physical, we're going to be alright. The linebackers have played well so far. Wayne Hardy plays beside me (at outside linebacker) and he's has shown a lot of improvement as well as Gerald McRath. Another guy that has really stepped up has been (defensive back) Ladarius Webb. He has one year under his belt, and he's going to be a good player. He's a small guy, but he's plays with a lot of heart.
Trevis - I see a big difference in this year's defense compared to last year's. We're going to be a lot faster this year, and we're going to pursue the ball even faster. As far as players who've stepped up on defense, Wayne Hardy is going to be a big playmaker for us. Ladarius Webb has also been a big playmaker for us. He's coming along and is really learning the defense.
Kevis - The first part of two-a-days on Monday wasn't so good; some of the guys were kind of sluggish. We came out that afternoon, and picked it up a little bit. The tempo of two-a-days (practicing twice one day; once the next. Per NCAA rules) is going really well though.
The players look good out there and seem to be in pretty good shape. We have to beat the heat, because it has been pretty hot. The weather hasn't affected our play much. We have to come out there and continue to play with mental toughness. It's been hot on the field during practices and it's going to be hot on September 4 (versus Tulane) for our first game, and we have to prepare for it now.
Trevis - I think the weather has affected some of the players, but if you love the game of football you can't worry about the weather. You go out and play football.
Kevis - As far as how Trevis has been playing so far this season, he's the "vet" back there in the defensive backfield as far as knowing what to do and telling the other guys what to do. If he's makes the right calls, we'll be fine.
Trevis - Kevis is leading the front seven and I'm trying to lead the back four. He's leading the defense and is a big playmaker for us. He's a good player for our defense. It's always good to be on the field at the same time as my brother, with me playing safety and seeing him in front of me at middle linebacker. He stops the run, and I'm back there at safety, trying to stop the pass.
