Lady Eagle Volleyball Team Falls In Home Match

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss Lady Eagle volleyball team dropped their home match to visiting Houston in three games, 3-0 (30-20, 30-24, 30-13), falling to 5-9 on the season and remained winless in league play at 0-6. Houston improved to 9-8 and 4-1 in Conference USA.

Jazzmien Stephens and Morgan Johnson led the team in kills with nine apiece. Stevi Cherry and Ashley Petrinec recorded five kills. Amanda Blunck led the team with nine digs and Petrinec added eight digs. For the Cougars, Kariny Ritter led the team in kills with a match-high 18, followed by Justin Farmer with 16 and Becca Sartori added 13 kills. Jaci Gonzalez recorded a match-high 22 digs with Farmer and Ritter adding 11 and 10 digs, respectively.

Both team battled early to a 9-9 tie before Houston went on a 5-1 run to take a 14-10 lead. The Cougars pushed their lead to nine on three occasions before winning 30-20.

Game two started much like the first game. Both team battled early on. After a service rotation error by Southern Miss, the Cougars led 9-7. The Golden Eagles battled back to take a 12-11 lead on a 5-2 run. With the scored tied 12-12, Houston went on an 8-1 run and took to the lead for good and won 30-24 in game two.

In game three, Houston jumped out to a 10-3 lead and never looked back. The Cougars cruised to a 30-13 win.

Southern Miss returns to action this Sunday, October 16 with another home match against Rice. First serve is 12 p.m. in the Payne Center. The athletic department will also honor the All-30 team in a post-match ceremony.
