Southern Miss Prepares For C-USA Home Series
Lady Eagles gearing up big weekend |
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss returns home to host a weekend series with Houston and Rice in Conference USA action. The volleyball program will take part in helping to celebrate 30 years of women's athletics by honoring the past players, coaches, managers and trainers.
Southern Miss is coming off a 0-2 weekend, losing both matches last weekend to Marshall and East Carolina. The Golden Eagles have a record of 5-8 and 0-5. Ashley Petrinec continues to lead the team in kills with 150, while Morgan Johnson has 105 and Jazzmien Stephens has 102 kills and leads the team in blocks. Amanda Blunck leads the team in digs with 193 and Ednali Serralta leads the team in assists and aces.
Houston comes in with an 8-8 record and 3-1 mark in league play, having won its last three matches. Kariny Ritter leads her team in kills with 262, ranking her in the top 10 in the conference. Jaci Gonzalez is averaging 6.25 digs per game, ranking second in C-USA.
Rice has a record of 11-4 and 2-2. Rice has won its last two matches. Olaya Paro leads the Owls in kills with 276, ranking third in the league in kills per game. Tessa Kuykendall leads the team in blocks and Yvette Kirk leads the team in digs with 234.
In conjuction with the volleyball matches, the Southern Miss athletic department will recognize past players, coaches, managers and trainers in celebrating 30 years of women's athletics. An All-30 Team will be announced during the weekend activities.
Following the Rice match, Southern Miss hosts in-state rival Alcorn State, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
