Softball Team Progressing Through Fall Practice
The Lady Eagles held their first intersquad game today. With eight freshmen joining this year?s team, Southern Miss Head Softball Coach and 2004 Conference
?We?ve worked on a lot of fundamentals with the freshmen, and a lot of them have been coming to practice early to get some extra work,? McNutt said. ?They are working hard, and are getting better every day. They are going to be a big key to our success this season, because there are so many of them.?
McNutt said that the freshmen are adjusting, now that the team is in its second week of practice.
?The freshmen were overwhelmed at first with so much information,? McNutt said. ?As a coaching staff, we?ve had to take a step back and take things one step at a time. It?s going to be a day-to-day process to get them up to speed with the rest of the team. But we?ve worked with them more individually, and that seems to have paid off. The freshmen are very capable and we?re going to be pleased with the end result.?
McNutt said the team has a few nagging injuries, but nothing serious.
Southern Miss, the defending Conference
The Lady Eagles will play in two fall tournaments, including the Southern Miss Fall Classic Oct. 9, welcoming
?The players are looking forward to the Fall Classic,? McNutt said. ?They?re ready to put the uniforms on. They?re very excited to play.?
There will be a total of eight games played in the Fall Classic, with each team playing three games. Six games will be played at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, and two at William Carey?s Field. The team will take part in the Spring Klein College Classic in Spring Klein,
Southern Miss opens its 2005 season Saturday, Feb. 5, in a home doubleheader against
