Southern Miss Plays at UNO
Stephens and Truong received all-tournament honors |
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Lady Eagle volleyball team plays their sixth-straight match on the road, traveling to New Orleans, La., to play the UNO Privateers, Sept. 14.
Southern Miss is coming off a 2-0 weekend, where the Lady Eagles defeated McNeese State, 3-2, and South Alabama, 3-1, to win the Ashbury Suites Classic. Jazzmien Stephens and Amy Truong were named to the all-tournament team with Truong receiving MVP honors.
Stephens registered a season-high 18 kills against McNeese State, while Leslie VanDuinen posted a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs. Amanda Blunck recorded 24 digs. VanDuinen posted another double-double with 15 kills and 14 digs against South Alabama and Blunck added 15 digs.
Stephens leads the team in kills with 64 and blocks with 30, followed closely by VanDuinen with 61 kills. Blunck leads the team in digs with 88.
UNO is coming of a 2-2 weekend, finishing third at the SpringHill Suites Classic in Charlotte, N.C. Jennifer Cruz was named to the all-tournament team for her performance. Cruz leads the team in kills with 107, while Jayne Duncan leads the team in digs with 169.
The meeting with UNO will be the 18th meeting between the two teams, and UNO leads the series 20-7.
Southern Miss continues its road swing when the Lady Eagles travel to Fort Collins, Colo., for the University Park Classic. Southern Miss will play No. 9 ranked Pepperdine, Sept. 16, Ohio University, Sept. 17, and No. 10-ranked Colorado State, Sept. 18.
