Darren McCaleb converted on a 39 yard field goal, giving Southern Miss a 3-0 lead with 5:42 to play in the first quarter.

The Cornhuskers made the score 6-3 with 14:50 to play in the second quarter on a 35-yard field goal from Sandr DeAngelis.
Southern Miss went on a 15-play drive with 5:59 remaining in the first half, registering four first downs on the drive, which resulted in another McCaleb field goal, this time a 21-yarder, making the the halftime score 9-3.
Nebraska took its first lead on its first offensive series of the second half, as Dailey tossed a nine-yard touchdown pass to Grant Mulkey, making the score 10-9 with 11:29 to play in the third quarter.
The Cornhuskers took advantage of Southern Miss? only turnover of the game, an interception by Daniel Bullocks, as Dailey threw a 13-yard touchdown to Matt Herian, making the score 17-9 with 10:00 to play in the third quarter.

With 8:34 to play in the game, Darrell Bennett recovered a fumble by Cornhusker Tierre Green, giving the Golden Eagles the ball at their own 49 yard line. Two plays later, Dustin Almond put Southern Miss ahead to stay, tossing a 46 yard touchdown to Marvin Young. The two-point conversion attempt was no good, as Southern Miss led 21-17 with 7:47 remaining in the game.

The Cornhuskers out-gained the Golden Eagles in total offense 476 to 239. Almond finished the game by completing 12-of-28 passes for 142 yards. Antwon Courington led the Golden Eagle receivers with 63 yards on three catches, while Young also caught three passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. Anthony Harris finished with 19 carries for 72 yards.

? Boley also forced two fumbles on the day, pushing his career total to six, which currently ranks tied for third on the Southern Miss all-time career mark in that category.
? Two players - junior defensive tackle Terrance Ford and junior linebacker Naton Stewart - both tallied the first interceptions of their respective careers today. Stewart took his pick 49 yards for a touchdown, also the first of his career. John Eubanks had the team's third interception.
